Apathy is Supremely Bad. For Everyone.

Invisible Children | Kony2012.

If you are not aware of who Joseph Kony is, you should be. He is the embodiment of evil in a part of the world that is too often ignored by the rest of us and the fact that he has been allowed to carry on his reign of terror for well over 20 years is a testament to the power of apathy.

For the past few weeks, I have been researching stories and images of the Nazi extermination camp at Chelmno, Poland, and it baffled me how such atrocities could be allowed to continue for four years without the world being entirely aware of what was going on, not to mention the local population, which remained essentially ignorant the entire time. This extermination camp operated from 1941 to 1944; even though a prisoner escaped in 1942 and he managed to get word through the resistance to the Allies, the world remained ignorant of the camp’s operations. The Nazis destroyed most of the evidence of its existence and willful ignorance persists through the guise of Holocaust deniers. I still don’t fully comprehend how the Nazi death machine was able to operate so efficiently when what they were doing should have caused every human alarm to blare.

And then I watched this movie. The organization Invisible Children has been running a campaign to raise awareness of Mr. Kony. Visit the site. Participate. Show the world that you are not going to accept apathy. It is time to set a better example for future generations.

UPDATE: Kony video campaign surpasses 100 million views in record six days. Pretty amazing performance for a video campaign. Regardless of your political feelings, this stands as a testament to the potential of viral video.
